THURSDAY NIGHT MEN’S TWILIGHT NEWS

For the July 22nd edition of the Thursday Night Men’s Twilight, Miller’s Wheel Alignment had us all pumped up and ready to drive straight. We were back to the familiar 4 (or 5, or 6) man scramble format and huntin’ for skins.

On the front side the Kerfoot family reunion (Rick, Dale, Wayne, C.R., and Chris) along with Shawn Ferguson were the winners in the A Division, while Gary Badour, Ron Coleman, Harry Jansen, and Charlie Harrison took the B Division.

The back nine group of Mike Koziel, John McKenney, Dave McKenney, Goldie Dixit, Rick Wiseman, and Steve James were back in mid-season form; they took the A Division title. Graham Merpaw, Dave Lawrence, Bob Miskelly, Don Grant, and Don Nesbitt cruised in as B Division champs.

The Roosteraunt closest-to-the-pin prizes went to Dale Kerfoot and Hugh Colton for their nice tee shots on holes 8 and 18. Ron Brus and Kerwin O’Neil took home the Burns’ Jewelers gift certificates for best approach shots on holes 9 and 10.

Andrew Flegg and Ken “Curd” Campbell flexed their muscles and crushed a couple drives on holes 2 and 13; they won the longest drive prizes for their efforts. Peter Aunger had the right ticket in his pocket winning the 50/50 draw, and Don Grant took home the bottle of Rocky’s Warm-up Water.

Thanks to Miller’s Wheel Alignment for a fine prize table and to all who came out. See you next week.

THURSDAY NIGHT MEN’S TWILIGHT NEWS

Town and Country Chrysler was the generous sponsor of the July 8th edition of the Thursday Night Men’s Twilight and the format was a good one: 4 Man Twilight Best Ball.

Nate O’Neil led his team of Dom Peladeau, Berek Hinton, Jeff Hinton, and Jay Jamieson to victory in the A Division on the front side with a score of 31. Jason Drummond, Steve Lumsden, Scott Bedford, Hank Hart, Greg Sonnenberg, and “The Other Guy” claimed the front nine B Division title with a 34.

On the back nine, Jim Kayser captained the team of Tye and Nic Vaillancourt (a.k.a. “Mini-me” and “Mini-mini-me”), Mike Milks, and Mike Whitby to an impressive A Division score of 28. Dave Hawkins, Jim Gunn, John Hoysted, another Hoysted, and Rod Cook were once again B Division winners with an awesome 30.

Jordan Best and George Thompson were the Roosteraunt “Closest to the Pin” prize winners for their tee shots on holes 8 and 14. Adam Summers and Sober Mike picked up the Burns’ Jewelers prizes for best approach shot on holes 5 and 15, respectively.

The longest drives on holes 9 and 10 went to Steve Lumsden and Dan McNeely. Justin Woody was the 50/50 draw winner, and Nate O’Neil won the bottle of Rocky’s Rubbing Alcohol. Speaking of Twilight Ayatollah, Rocky had a hole in one on number 16! Congratulations, Supreme Leader!

Thanks to all those who came out to play, and to Town and Country Chrysler for a great prize table. See you next week.

OTHER SFG&CC GOLF NEWS

A disappointed SFG&CC Men’s Intersectional Team will remain in Divison B after placing third in OVGA Intersectionals held at their home club on Sunday, July 11th. Camelot Golf Club won the overall points title with 36, followed by Rivermead with 33, Smiths Falls with 29, and Renfrew with 22. That means Camelot will advance to Division A, while Renfrew will drop to Division C.

The Member’s Class B Tournament was held on Sunday, July 4th and four places were awarded. Ben and Carolyn Russel were first with a net score of 62, Mike and Robin Milks took second place with a 67, Joe and Pauline Kolano third with a 69, and Howard and Lilianne Radford finished fourth with a net score of 69.5.  Thanks to Mike and Robin Milks for organizing the tournament. THURSDAY NIGHT MEN’S TWILIGHT NEWS

It is with a heavy heart that I write this edition of the Thursday Night Men’s Twilight News, in light of the passing of our good friend, and Twilight regular, Gerry Lowe.  As difficult as it is to accept that Gerry is gone, I hope we can all find some solace in his memory; the jokes and the generosity. Gerry was a true original whose very presence energized any event, and Thursday night golf was no different. We won’t forget his rushing in to the clubhouse last minute, patting backs, and throwing out one-liners, hurrying to sign in at the head table. We won’t forget his infectious laughter, or his good natured teasing. And, most of all, we won’t forget to have fun, because that’s what Gerry would have wanted.

Smith’s Shoes was our June 24th Twilight sponsor. A red, white, and blue scramble, the night included some impressive scoring. Dale Kerfoot, Tom Henderson, Hugh Gillespie, Brent Rotundo, Bill Crawford, and Hugh Colton were the A Division winners on the front nine with a score of 28. In the B Division, Greg Hull, Jerry Edwards, Bob Mulrooney, David Fleming, Chris Saumure, and Jim Paul were close behind with an impressive 29.

The Roosteraunt closest-to-the-pin prizes went to Greg Hull and Dave Fleming for their tee shots on holes 3 and 8. The Burns’ Jewellers best-second-shot gift certificates were awarded to Hug Colton and Garth Hannah for their approaches on holes 4 and 5.

Blake Loucks and Steve McKenna were the long drivers of the evening, smashing a couple deep on holes 6 and 9. Justin MacMillan was the 50/50 draw winner, and Chris Saumure took home the bottle of Rocky’s Paint Thinner.

Finally, Jim Gunn was the winner of the not so prestigious shortest drive prize, taking home a very special piece of apparel. You’ll have to ask him about it. Thanks to our sponsor, Smith’s Shoes, and to all who came out. See you next week.

Last week’s Obsessed With Golf Trivia question:

Jack Nicklaus was in the scoring tent accepting congratulations for his record fifth U.S. Open championship, but that wall proved premature when Tom Watson chipped in on the 17th and birdied the 18th for his first U.S. Open win. What was the year?

Answer: D. 1982, Pebble Beach GL

This week’s question:

What course was Arnold Palmer’s first as a designer?

A.      Bay Hill Club

B.      Indian Lake Golf Club

C.      Adios Golf Club

D.      Deacon’s Lodge                                                        See next week’s article for the answer.

MEN’S THURSDAY NIGHT TWILIGHT NEWS

Our friends at Glenview Iron and Metal sponsored the June 17th edition of the Thursday Night Men’s Twilight and it was a banner night on the links.

The format was the ever popular 4-Man Scramble and although mathematics isn’t their strong suit, luckily for the team of Dave Hawkins, Jim Gunn, John Hoysted, Tom Hoysted, and Rob Dales, getting the little white ball in the hole is. They were the A Division champs on the front nine with a score of 29. The B Division winning team of Mark Seguin, Dave Gordon, and Andrew Flegg were also numerically challenged, cruising to a very respectable 32.

On the back nine, Twilight Ayatollah led his committee of Thursday night revolutionaries to glorious victory in the A division. Drummy, Tommy, Roy, and Mark followed Rocky’s tee-to-green fatwa and lapped the field, needing only 25 shots to get round the back nine.  Craig Ritskes, Tony Ilan, Dean Buchanan, and Ted Dopson did what they do almost every week: win. This time it was the B Division on the back nine. Ho hum.

The Roosteraunt closest-to-the-pin prizes were won by Chad Storie and Rockin’ Roddy Hunt for their tee shots on holes 3 and 18. The Burns’ Jewellers gift certificates for best approach shots of the evening went to Steven Blair and George Thompson for a couple beauties on holes 2 and 12.

Dan Hoysted and Rob Dopson must be getting bored of hitting the longest drives. They did it again on holes 5 and 17. Steve James turned his back on his group, unwilling to share his 50/50 winnings, and Justin Jennings picked up the bottle of Greg Hull’s Truth Serum.

Thanks to all who came out. See you next week.

Last Week’s Obsessed With Golf Trivia question:

In which U.S. Open playoff did Arnold Palmer try to hit a ball from out of a tree stump to avoid a penalty and instead recorded a 7 on a par 4 and was effectively out of the playoff hunt?

Answer: D. The Country Club, 1963

This week’s question:

Jack Nicklaus was in the scoring tent accepting congratulations for his record fifth U.S. Open championship, but that was all proved premature when Tom Watson chipped in on the 17th and birdied the 18th for his first U.S. Open win. What was the year?

A.      1972, Pebble Beach GL

B.      1986, Shinnecock Hills GC

C.      1980, Baltusrol GC

D.     1982, Pebble Beach GL

MEN’S THURSDAY NIGHT TWILIGHT

Smiths Falls Nissan was behind the wheel of the June 10th edition of the Thursday Night Men’s Twilight and, although the weather threatened to put a damper on the evening, there was a good turnout and fun time was had by all.

The format was a 3-Man Scramble, unless you were the Haskins boys.  Cobey and Matt didn’t need a third player to get the job done; they were the front side winners in the A Division with a score of 31. Such talent! Must have got it from their mother, Mary. And speaking of talent, Doug Henderson, Jack Anderson, and George Francis were the B Division champs—again. Those guys are machines! They just need a little oil to get them going.

On the back nine, Paul and Nick Vaillancourt (a.k.a. “Me” and “Mini-Mini-Me”) also scoffed at the idea of a third player, cruising to a low A Division score of 29. Jerry Lowe was concentrating so hard on his game that he barely spoke a word to John Tobin and Dave Gordon. Together, they posted the low B Division tally of 31.

The Roosteraunt closest to the pin prizes was a Henderson affair. Doug stuck it tight on number 8 and Tom threw a dart on 16. The Burns Jewelers prizes for closest second shots went to Jeff Hinton and John Tobin for a couple beautiful approaches on holes 2 and 12.

The longest drives of the evening on holes 4 and 15 were pounded by Cobey Haskins and Gerry Lowe. Apparently Gerry forgot to take the boxing glove head cover off his driver. Hey, whatever works.

Mike McIntosh had the winning 50/50 number and Justin Jennings took home the bottle of Rocky’s Balance Buster. But most would agree that the high point of the evening was when Craig Ritskes proved he’s the flat stick king of the world by draining the “20 boards” putt. According to his team, it was the only one he’s made this year.

Thanks to the sponsor, Smiths Falls Nissan, and to all of those who came out. See you next week.

Last Week’s Obsessed With Golf trivia question:

Which player tied Ben Crenshaw’s record of winning three NCAA Division I golf championships?

This week’s question:

In which U.S. Open playoff did Arnold Palmer try to hit a ball from out of a tree stump to avoid a penalty and instead recorded a 7 on a par 4 and was effectively out of the playoff hunt?

A.      Oakmont CC, 1962            B. Olympic CC, 1966

C.      Baltusrol, 1967                  D. The Country Club, 1963
